List of water points when cycling from CPT up to BFN for the MUNGA again this year
What is the MUNGA? According to them: >1000kms of South African gravel road stretches from Bloemfontein to Wellington through the raw heart of the Karoo in the height of summer. Five race villages. Ten waterpoints. 120 hours. Solo. Non-stop. Just you and the road and the question that brought you here in the first place.
We will go up to the start by bicycle and these are the potential stops. All days are roughly 200kms, except for day 1 which starts just shy of 300kms. Which means, other than previous up-cycles, shorter days in the saddle and more rest. Brilliant. Arrive fresh for the return trip home. And with all those lovely water points on the race itself it will be pure bliss coming down. Not having to fend for yourself or raid windpompe like on the way upβ¦
On google maps
*PS, the google maps embed featured doesnβt work if you used a custom map. The links below has the routes we take, but when you tap to embed the maps google ignores the custom waypoints and just embeds their own shorted or most obvious way from point (A) to (B) depending on your chosen mode of transport. Hence no embeds and I just shared the daily route links below.
Day 1 to Sutherland
The first day is the longest. With the most climbing. Still in civilization and many water points to choose from. Leave Paarl in the early hours. Because it is a long hot day through the Tankwa. So over Bainskloof. And could stop after 70kms in Wolseley at the 24hrs garage, before climbing Michellβs pass to Ceres. To first stop in Ceres at 85kms. Then Ou Swaarmoed pass passing Klondyke. Can stop at the farmhouse before the T-junction after 130kms to fill up a bottle before entering the void.
And then onto Tankwa padstal at 175kms. Last time we arrived before they were open. Aim to time it better this time around. At 195kms Bizanshoek there may or may not be something β that right hand corner climb. But we know there is a tap behind the farmhouse at 220kms. And then out of the Tankwa and onto the tar road. To the Verlatenkloof padstal at 265kms if they are still open. Before we finish in Sutherland after 290kms.
Day 2 to Loxton
Over 200kms for the day with Fraserburg right in the middle. But before we get there, we may encounter a tap at 40kms on a farm or 62kms at Vaaldraai self-catering. Then definitely something in Fraserburg after 100kms. Then kamp Klipmuur under the trees after 130kms with ablutions. And 150kms at the containers at Saaifontein. With a last potential opportunity (or not) at 166kms). Before we finish in Loxton at 205kms.
Day 3 to Britstown
The middle of the week. The middle of the country. And the least of anything en route. We can greet Cecil on the farm after 62kms. Then pop into Vosburg at 125kms. And maaaaybe something at the Mintakaroo Boerboel place after the crossroads at 165kms, a bit off the road to the right-hand side. Before we finish in Britstown at 185kms.
Day 4 to Luckhoff
Potfontein is about the halfway mark, but there is nothing at Potfontein. So fill up before. First stop is at Renosterfontein at 50kms. Expect nothing at potfontein 80kms. Then a farm at 95kms. Another farm by the right turn at 120kms. And then Petrusville petrol station at 145kms. Then the R48 tar road over the Oranjerivier from the Northern Cape into the Free State and the last 25kms to the finish in Luckhoff at 195kms.
Day 5 to Bloemfontein
The last day is the shortest at just 175kms. First stop at Fauresmith 55kms. Then Jagersfontein 70kms. Off the main road at 120kms there is the farm Klipfontein to the right hand side. Houses on ether side of the road at 140kms. And Janmar bottelstoor and a house thereafter at 160kms. And a short stint to finish at Windmill Casino in BFN.
Tomorrow (registration), we service the bikes and register for the MUNGA back down homewards bound.
Letβs go!
