What does it cost to send a kayak or canoe in South Africa?

Well, it depends entirely on two things: (A) the size of it and (B) from where to where you are sending it. Chances are likely that it goes to a regional or more remote coastal area. Rather than just CPT or DBN or ELS or PLZ main centers. Think of Knysna or Plett or Mosselbaai and along the Garden Route. What about Jeffries or Cape St Francis. Here we have two specific examples. As I wanted to know for myself: what does it cost to send a kayak or canoe in SA. Keep in mind they may get to 3m or 4 meters long – which means not all courier companies will be able to accommodate. Because of the vehicle size required.

Here we go. Two Examples below.

Example 1: From WILDERNESS to JHB

2x kayaks with dimensions LBH in cms at 408*87*36 and 40kgs each. Which means the volumetric weight based on factor 4000 is 1.277 million div 4k = 320 kgs volumetric. Compared to a standard sized boxed bicycle at 160*30*80 which comes in at 96kgs volumetric. So these kayaks are substantially bigger. Not only that – the length exceeds 4 meters. Which immediately eliminates DSV, which has a 2.8 meters max length for collections based on their clientzone pricing portal. Got prices aggregated as usual and here they are in order:

• TCG R13k for both
• DSV nil >2.8m
• MYC R8500 for both
• ITT R5500 for both
• Bicyclecouriers said: We can do it for double our standard boxed bike remote rate of R1199, so R2398 each. Ensure it is properly wrapped and have to go with the 8ton truck minimum to load. For collection and delivery.

Example 2: From KAREEDOUW to JHB

These were ever so slightly smaller examples. And lighter. And not as long, but still over the DSV threshold. LBH for the 2x came in at 287*80*32 and 350*77*41 cms and weighing in at 22kgs and 26kgs respectively. Rates came back at:

• ITT R5000
