‘We buy cars’ is listed on the JSE. Are you ready for ‘we buy bicycles’?
Nope, I don’t intend to create a bicycle trading portal. But I do know a bargain when I see one. So here are 2x examples of bicycles I have bought myself for personal use. Or to sell at a profit. Let’s see how it goes. And can you believe it, both of these are bright red Specialized EPIC’s. What a coincidence. Or was it meant to be? You decide. Eith way, what I do know is fortunate favours those who do stuff.
Example 1: an EPIC from Hermanus
Buying and selling bicycles at inconvenient times?
This was easy to spot. I know the brand and the components and could see from the photos on Facebook marketplace that it looked good. In fact, at first I thought maybe someone made a mistake, or is hiding something. Because what is saw is a bicycle being advertised for R7500 where it could immediately sell for R15k. So I phoned the seller. And he was moving abroad. And selling some stuff. Including the bicycle. Now I still didn’t want to buy it ‘sight unseen’, for the fear of something major amiss. And I didn’t want to drive from Stellenbosch to Hermanus for a relatively low value item. Because you have to value and factor in your own time. So, I did the following:
I told the seller I will definitely take the bike, but need to courier it to Stellenbosch. He doesn’t have to do anything, other than to take in the bike to Jannie at Village cycles in Sandbaai, which is the closest bike shop to the seller. *It helps know many people from many bike shops all across the country! This was on a Sunday afternoon. The Monday morning first thing the seller took in the bike.
Jannie at the bike shop confirmed that it was in order. I paid the seller via instant EFT. And Village cycles for the for the inspection and boxing. Then arranged to have it collected by #bicyclecouriers and brought to me in Stellenbosch. Where I saw what a bargain it was. Already cleaned, I just took photos and loaded the new ad on Marketplace. And sold it for R15k, doubling the initial outlay within 1 or 2 weeks. Not bad. Let’s do so again? Example 2: an EPIC from JHB

This one was not for re-sale. This one was for me. And I am still using it. And I love it. who knew the difference in feel between the previous gen alu EPIC and the later gen (still with a brain shock) carbon EPIC can be so vast. But it is. And I love it. and just want to spend more and more time on the MTB. Where are we cycling next? Either way, this is how this purchase came about:
My very own EPIC had it’s 10-year anniversary. I loved that bike. The MUNGA route 5x or more, the ABSA Cape Epic on 3x consecutive years (amazing, and very fortunate), and a whole range of Atta’s and Transbaviaanse and Cross Cape Routes and many more. Needles to say it wasn’t an easy let go. But I found a good new home for it. And spotted a worthy replacement: another (newer) EPIC. But it was in JHB.
No worries! I asked the seller where has was based. In Randburg. Easy! Take it to Jarrod at Linden cycles. Which he did. And Jarrod gave me the thumbs up. So, I paid the seller. And Linden cycles did the boxing so that #bicyclecouriers can collect once again and bring it down to me. And now I am riding it. Hopefully more often than not. This example shows buying and selling bikes from anywhere in the country could be made quick and easy. With the bicycle couriers network.
