What is The Owl Route?
In their own words: The Owl Route is a luxurious glamping escape into the heart of the Karoo. It consists of a 3-day mountain bike experience limited to 80 riders. During the event, riders will be treated to an all-inclusive riding and culinary experience in the quaint village of Nieu Bethesda. The rolling mountains of the Sneeuberge will remain the backdrop of the 3-day experience. You will be led back to the welcoming arms of Nieu Bethesda and its hand-built, fully functioning water furrows and historic sites.
When & where is The Owl Route?
Experience the Karoo like you have never before. Send your bicycle to the start in Nieu-Bethesda, at the tennis club! When is the next OWL route Karoo MTB Experience? The OWL route runs from 24-26 April 2026. Did you know? Nieu-Bethesda is a village in the Eastern Cape at the foot of the Sneeuberge, approximately 50 kilometres north of Graaff Reinet. It was founded in 1875 as a church town, like many other Karoo villages, and attained municipal status in 1886. The name is of biblical origin and means “place of flowing water”.
How to get to The Owl Route?
- Directions from JHB: Take the N1 towards Colesberg. From there follow the N9 towards Middelburg. When travelling on the N9 between Middelburg and Graaff Reinet, you will take the second Nieu Bethesda turn-off +- 80,2 km from Middelburg. Continue on for about 22km until you reach the end of the tar road, leading onto a dirt road and then follow the rest below…
- Directions from CPT: Take the N1 to Beauford West. From Beaufort West, turn right onto the R61 towards Aberdeen. Drive until a 4-way stop before Aberdeen, and turn left towards Graaff-Reinet on the N9. When travelling on the N9 between Graaff Reinet and Middelburg, you will take the first Nieu Bethesda turn-off +- approximately 29.9 km from Graaff Reinet. Continue for about 22km until you reach the end of the tar road, leading onto a dirt road and then follow the rest below…
Make a sudden right turn, continuing over a low water bridge, and continue straight with this road for approximately 1 km before entering Nieu-Bethesda. You will find a 2-way stop, continue with this road crossing your second stop sign found at a 4-way stop approximately 250m down the road. Carry on straight for 70m, where you will see The Owl Route branding to your right. The hosting venue is the town’s Tennis Club.
How to send your bicycle to The Owl Route?
Easy! Just us #bicyclecouriers. We’ve sent bicycles to and from that tennis court before, and we will do so again. You can either pack the bike yourself and we can collect door to door from your home. Or just take it into your nearest bicycle shop for them to box it for you.
