Overall, Cape Town’s natural beauty and variety of cycling options make it a must-visit destination for cycling enthusiasts.
Paarl

The Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve offers a network of mountain bike trails, ranging from easy to difficult, that wind through the fynbos-covered mountains and offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. And what better place to Everest than going up and down the Taalmonument climb? The town is also home to several road cycling routes that take riders through the rolling hills and vineyards of the Paarl Winelands. Overall, Paarl offers a range of cycling options for both road and mountain bike enthusiasts.
Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch Trail Fund offers a network of mountain bike trails, ranging from easy to difficult, that wind through vineyards, forests, and hills. My favourites include Banhoek, Skyfall, Bethlehem trails and Jonkershoek. The town is also home to several road cycling routes that take riders through the scenic countryside and past vineyards and farms. Overall, Stellenbosch’s natural beauty and variety of cycling options make it a must-visit destination for cycling enthusiasts.
Somerset West

Somerset West hosts several notable cycling events throughout the year, including the W2W MTB Ride, a three-day mountain bike stage race. George

And one of my favourite climbs is the Montagu pass, especially when riding back from the finish of the Attakwas to its starting point in Oudtshoorn.

Pietermaritzburg is home to Greg Minnaar, the G.O.A.T. And several mountain bike trails, including the Karkloof MTB Trails, which offer a network of flowing singletracks through indigenous forests and plantations, with routes suitable for all levels of riders. The nearby Midlands Meander also offers several road cycling routes that take riders through the rolling hills and farmland of the surrounding countryside. Pietermaritzburg hosts several notable cycling events throughout the year, including the Comrades Marathon, a road running race that attracts many cyclists who ride alongside the runners, and the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, which takes place at the Cascades MTB Park and attracts top international mountain bikers.
Johannesburg

I loved cycling in the Cradle of Humankind, along with many other cyclists over the weekends. Pretoria

But before you even get there, the Mabalingwe Lion Man MTB in Warmbad remains a firm favourite! Polokwane is home to several road cycling routes, including the Polokwane Nature Reserve, which offers views of the city and the surrounding bushveld, and the Cycad Hiking Trail, which takes riders through the rugged terrain of the nearby hills. AllTrails listed the Best Mountain Biking Trails in Limpopo, that wind through scenic hills and valleys, with routes suitable for all levels of riders.
Bloemfontein
Cycling in Bloemfontein is a popular activity, with several scenic routes and trails that showcase the city’s natural beauty. The city is home to several road cycling routes, including the Soetdoring Nature Reserve, which takes riders through lush gardens and tranquil wetlands. Bloemfontein also offers several mountain bike trails, including the Bains MTB Trails, which offer a network of trails that wind through scenic hills and valleys, with routes suitable for all levels of riders. My favourite annual bicycle break is cycling from Stellenbosch up to BFN for the start of the Munga MTB race back home.
