BIKE ALREADY BOXED? You have options!
Bicycle couriers offers a boxed bicycle transport service across South Africa, and beyond. And yes you have options when it comes to answering our question, ‘is your bike already boxed’? Yes, we send it boxed, both for safety, and convenience, and that is how we can keep our costs so low. Because sending a bike from CPT to Nelspruit (or any other main center for that matter) for just 699 is a bargain! Even if we have to say so ourselves. And we get compliments on the low prices all the time. Find our more about volumetric weight. And by the way this should answer your question about whether the bike should be boxed (yes please) or just bubble wrapped (nope).
(A) You can either pack it yourself,
You can either box the bike yourself, DIY, and have it ready when our driver arrives at your door to collect. Please note the drivers aren’t allowed to box it for you, as they are not specifically trained to do so. And we have some handy tips on how to pack your bicycle for transport right here. Here is A step-by-step guide to Boxing a Bicycle for shipping or travel. Admittedly, unlike in Europe, in South Africa we are used to car guards and petrol attendants and many other conveniences. So, if boxing your own bicycle sounds like a stretch too far, then do make use of the next option, which most people do…
(B) OR you can use a bike shop!
BUT if you cannot or don’t want to box the bike yourself, then you can do the following. And this is what most of our loyal customers choose to do. Just take the bicycle into your nearest bike shops. And let them box it for you. At a nominal fee. Which you can pay directly to the shop. Don’t know which bike shop to use? Just ask us! Or use these handy suggestions for the following main centers:
- Cape Town& Paarl
- Stellenbosch& Somerset West
- George, PE& East London
- Durban& Pietermaritzburg
- Johannesburg& Pretoria
- Nelspruit& Polokwane
- Bloemfontein& Kimberley
- Anywhere else is a remote area.
What about the receiving end?
Here is a quick and easy guide on 1-2-3 steps how to build a boxed bicycle. Usually, they use massive bikeboxes for shipment, so most often the rear wheel stays on. Ie only the front wheel and the pedals come off, and the handlebar is turned or loosened at the stem. So building the bike takes a handful of minutes and can be done by using just your multitool from the saddle bag. But, again, you can opt to have the bicycle delivered to a bike shop and have them build it for you. Which might incur another fee, payable directly to said bike shop. When you are buying a new bike and it has to be set up or serviced, the shop might waive this fee if they have to do some work on the bike anyway. But it depends on each and every shop and is done at their discretion.
When buying or selling a bike
There are no rules when it comes to who pays for what when it comes to buying or selling a bike and then transporting it from seller to buyer, either via Bikehub or marketplace or any private sale. But we found that most often the buyer is happy to pay for (and usually books) the transport. And the seller is usually happy to pay (when he or she drops off the bike at the bike shop) for the boxing. So with the current rates, as it stands at the time of writing, you can expect to pay around R300 for boxing (shop-dependent) and 699 for sending a bike between main centra like CPT to JHB, for example.
PS, We also like the shop option because they are open during business hours so we know there is always someone to receive or hand over the bike. Ie our drivers don’t arrive to collect or deliver from someone’s home and said person isn’t there.
There you have it.
Quick. Easy. Transparent.
