Give the #giftofadventure with the WOW foundation for the Warriors on Wheels
WOW Foundation is a wonderful initiative to This Sunday I was privileged to pull my nephew in a buggy on the Cape Town Cycle Tour as part of the Warriors on Wheels group. But what is the WOW foundation? The easiest way to find out is by answering the question of Wie, Wat, Waar, Wanneer, Hoekom, Hoe? All below.
WHO — is the WOW foundation?
Warriors in Wheels was started by Deirdre Gower 10 years ago. She stayed right across from Vrede Wines where we used to reside for a decade after returning from JHB to CPT. What started with, I believe a side cart trip on Harley Davidson bikes for differently abled children (warriors) turned into something much bigger and today the foundation gives back so much to so many families that you have the deepest respect for what Deirdre has started. They have helped over a hundred families and organized over a hundred events over the last decade.
WHAT — is the WOW foundation?
Warriors on Wheels is a NPO non-profit organization that organizes events for children who would overwise not be able to take part in same, be it being pulled in a buggy on bicycle races (as opposed to cycling it themselves); or being pushed in a buggy during running events or marathons (as opposed to running it themselves); or many more.
WHERE — is the WOW foundation?
Here and there and everywhere. With the aim on a monthly adventure (more on that below), here are just some of the hero adventure hosts who assist with the warriors on wheels vision and mission. Thank you for taking part and what the warriors are trying to achieve!

WHEN — do they have activities?
Ideally having monthly adventures. Our main aim is to host a monthly adventure at a different service provider. These events include activities like ziplining, river rafting, surfing, horse riding, boat trips, aquarium & museum visits and more. WOW strives to promote universally accessible tourism in South Africa through our partnerships with service providers. ‘We aim to encourage & support establishments on the ongoing journey.’
WHY — does WOW foundation exist?
In their own words: Warrior On Wheels Foundation aims to uplift and empower children with disabilities by providing special adventures tailored for special kids, thereby changing perceptions of ability and bridging gaps between able-bodied and differently-abled communities. Through consulting with adventure providers and establishments within the tourism industry we are forging partnerships that promote accessibility for all abilities.
HOW — can you get involved?
Easy. Make a difference and help the warriors grow:
- You can sign up as a warrior if you want to get involved and meet other like-minded people. You are not alone. Take part in these activities, to show others what can be done and grab life by the horns.
- You can sign up as a volunteer and pull a cycling buggy or push a running buggy act as a co-pilot or second in command on these sports outings or help in another way off the bike or out of the running shoes.

Did you know?
*Oh, and #bicyclecouriers send their buggies and bicycles all across the country to the next events. Including the 947 Ride JHB; the Amashova in DBN, the PE Herald cycle tour. And no need to send it to the CTCT because we all are right at home and have been doing it for 10 years already. (Do you know what else has been running for 10 years? The Tourdeboland).
