QUEEN: ABSA Cape EPIC Stage 5

Welcome to the Queen stage of the ABSA Cape EPIC 2025: Stage 5

Five-star difficulty for stage five. Transition from Fairview in Paarl via Coetzenburg and Stellenbosch to Lourensford in Somerset West. Today is the toughest stage of the 2025 race – both ito the longest distance (about 100kms) and the most climbing (>2800m). The route includes coming through Stellenbosch. Muratie, Coetzenburg. And climbing up the Neck to get back to Lourensford and ending with the singletrack I most fondly remember, in Young Bafana.

What happened on the ABSA Cape EPIC Stage 5?

Start with a 3km neutral zone on the Human Rights day national holiday. Which means I was off to the coast in Struisbaai and hence didn’t see Chris and Jen and other come through Stellenbosch this afternoon. But John was there (and snapped the better part of 5000 images). Here follows the shortest update for the longest stage.

Tristan/Marco/AFRICAN (3rd) team went ahead on the Neck climb but was reeled in by the chasers and when Schurter/SCOTT (1st) saw Avendetto/WILIER (2nd) struggle, the SWISS team powered to the top and went full gas on the downhill to put >1min into the rest and take only their second stage win this year. Hence taking top spot on the podium. And still first in general classification after the ABSA Cape EPIC Stage 5.
