With the Freedom Challenge that starts in the Drakensberg; the IRONMAN 70.3® triathlon that takes place on the Durban beachfront (and cycling through Umhlanga); and the Amashova racing through the Valley of a Thousand Hills to finish at Moses Mabhida stadium — the friendly people from KZN sure are spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoors activities, expecially cycling. Welcome to the Republic of the Western Cape. Dare I say it is the heart of cycling in South Africa, especially Stellenbosch? Quick, name the first two cycling (multi-sport) events that come to mind when I say Eastern Cape? Well it’s the and the IRONMAN® 70.3 Buffalo City in EL (that usually kicks off the year early in January) and then the full IRONMAN® Africa Championships in PE (later, around April) off course. And how many bicycles have we not transported there before…

Moving away from triathlons and road races, the Eastern Cape also has some amazing MTB races, including my favourite, the Transbaviaans from Willowmore to J’Bay. I also fondly remember exploring new places from Elliot to Maclear and Matatiele and many others en route to the Sani in KZN, or from CPT via PE & EL to DBN for many magical miles on a bicycle there. Guilty as charged, I haven’t done much cycling in Limpopo. There was a time when we considered doing a RASA Race Around South Africa (5000km around the outskirts of our beautiful country), but eventually decided against it, for various reasons. And I was unable to make the inaugural MMB cross-border trip via Alldays with Eugene to the Tour de Tuli in Botswana (where Jacques Marais took the most amazing photos) — but only because I was busy cycling London-Edinburgh-London at the time, so I wasn’t completely missing out 🙂

Bicycle Couriers in Mpumalanga

Yes please! I fondly remember cycling the Jock Classic 3 stage one day road race starting in Barberton and going over Hilltop to stop for breakfast in Nelspruit, then via Boulders to Kaapmuiden for lunch, and finishing in Barbeton to complete the loop. And the next day was a +-7km hill-climb to a quick breakfast on top of a hill, attended by only around 15 cyclists if memory serves me. But what I do remember is being dead last at the top; but then again first one down by a country mile (thanks, gravity).

More memorable was my first ever “what do you call it when your bicycle goes so fast down a hill that is becomes unstable and starts to wobble?” A speed wobble (or shimmy), off course. It does NOT come highly recommended and is best avoided. That is an euphimism. I nearly shat myself. Either way, this might have been around 2011, a whole decade ago. I really hope the event is still running…

Ek was al by Sun City… indeed, we cycled many a great race there, both road and MTB. In fact, between the Magalies Monster (staying at ATKV Buffelsdrift) and the many MTB races around Hartebeespoort dam, we’ve done a fait bit of cycling in the North West. This was also the ‘start’ of our 1800km Sandton to Stellenbosch bicycle ride in December 2009, when Manus and I took the N14 passing Ventersdorp, Coligny, Biesiesvlei, Sannieshof, Delareyville, Broedersput and Kuruman before moving in to the Northern Cape as detailed below.

If there is one weekend that I sincerely miss, then it is the OFM Classic MTB and road race weekend in Bloemfontein (also a seeding events for the CTCT, way back when it still existed). Be careful of cycling through Clarens in the middle of winter — it’s freezing in the Free State. By contrast an Audax through Deneysville or Villiers during summer can be just as hot. And mind those thunderstorms…

But now, on to bigger things: The Munga MTB (said to be the toughest race on earth) starts in BFN and crosses the middle of South Africa in the heat of summer. Bicycle Couriers in the Northern Cape

One of my my first long distance cycling adventures was when we declared (after too much red wine) to cycle from JHB to CPT, via Springbok. At 200kms per day it took us a week. We laughed and learned a lot and it led to much bigger things later on — you’ve got to start somerwhere, right?

The majority of our journey was spent cycling on roads through the Northen Cape (which makes sense, seeing as it is SA’s largest province), passing through Kuruman, Kathu, Upington, Kakamas (and Augrabies Falls), Pofadder and Aggeneys (‘lead and copper and zinc is what we think’) on the N14 to Springbok. Then we turned left onto the N7 via Kamieskroon and Garies before reaching the Western Cape in Nuwerus.

Now this a great option for the December Holidays — If you are flying to George and staying in Knysna or Plettenberg Bay for a couple of weeks then your bags are most likely filled to max capacty already. Or you don’t want to have to choose between your golf clubs and your kids’ mountain bikes. With no space or time to struggle with a bicycle on a smaller aircraft, sending your bike directly to your destination can be a blessing in disguise. Keep everyone happy and make it as easy as possible for yourself.

Who knows, maybe know you finally get an opportunity to ride those great new trails at the Garden Route Trail park or cycle along the coast at Harkerville. Bicycle Transport by the numbers

Gauteng alone hosts one quarter of the South African population. Add KZN and you are allmost half-way. Throw the Western Cape into the mix and you have almost 60% of our people. And after adding the Eastern Cape and Limpopo we are pretty much accounting for 80% of all South Africans. The remaining 20% is spread out through Mpumalanga, North-West, the Free State and the Northern Cape. So, in terms of numbers and from a business point of view: tackle GP, KZN, WC & EC first.
