CHARITY: Prince Albert cycles
I heard of this only today, and by chance. Ons of our frequent customer Werner Wilders wanted to use his credit from a previous trip to send boxed bicycle goods from William at Dunkeld cycles in JHB to Prince Albert cycles as below for their charity. I asked about it and learned about the following. And you can help them too!
Actually, it was never a conscious decision to start a club (which is Prince Albert cycles). It just happened. The kids started turning up at the shop and said, “Meneer, ons wil fietsry.”
Says Arno Botha, the Co-founder of Prince Albert cycles. “And we normally cycle say 30 or 40 kms, on a Saturday morning. Some of them have ridden with us to Merweville, which is a 90 kms. In a way the cycling teaches the children more than just cycling.
Says Ruan, a member of Prince Albert cycles. “Oom Arno wil hê ons moet ons fietse oppas. En dit moes skoon bly en ons moet vir dit sorg. Ek voel goed na so lang fietsry want ek het iets bereik en vir my definitief oefening gekry.”
Says Leandro Sas, aka ‘Ysterbene’, and also a member of Prince Albert cycles. “Oom Arno het vir ons baie geleer van spanwerk. En ons moenie so onbeskof wees met mekaar nie. En as ander seerkry kan ons mekaar help as ons daar is.” // En “Ek dink ek gaan verder gaan met die fietsry. Ek sien my toekoms, as fietsry, by die Tour de France.”
Says Charles Ewerts, teacher and Co-founder of of Prince Albert cycles. “As ‘n onderwyser by die skool, en iemand wat gereeld saammet hulle fietsry, kan ek die verskil sien. In hoe hulle gegroei het. En hoe hulle selfvertroue het, om die dinge te kan doen.”
Challenges
Our biggest challenge at the moment is currently we have 15 bicycles for the kids at Prince Albert cycles. And we have about 300 children that want to ride. So to make this sustainable, we will have to look beyond Prince Albert cycles for funding.
You can make a difference
So ons hoop ons kan aanhou vir so lank as wat ons kan. Om die verandering en die verbetering binne-in die kinders te bring. En dit is waar die skenking inkom, waar ons sê OK, ons het ’n fonds. Ons het dit. om hierdie fietsryertjie net daai ekstra te gee. So ons sal enige skenking waardeer. Van enige iemand. En daar is ’n paar wat al gee.
